Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Tuesday, July 29, 1997 to Friday, August 1, 1997

This first conference represented the impetus for the creation of IASSCS.  Meeting participants perceived the need to address and rectify the fragmentation of sexuality studies around the globe, support sexuality research focusing on culture and society, and promote research training as a legitimate area of scholarship – within the context  of academic freedom, social justice and human rights and specifically, sexual rights and gender equality. The theme of this inaugural conference was “Beyond Boundaries: Sexuality across Cultures,” and it was jointly hosted by the University of Amsterdam and the University of Chicago. It was noted at that time that no organization existed which provided an international forum for the interdisciplinary, social, and cross-cultural studies of sexuality.
