Policy and advocacy

In the last decade, sexuality research has gained significant ground in the global south and has provided a deeper understanding both of the lived experiences of multiple sexual identities as well as the silences, denial and oppression experienced by many individuals regarding issues of sexuality.

While there is often a thin line between research and activism regarding sexuality and sexual rights, new conceptualizations and creative advocacy strategies have had a significant impact on sexual rights activism. Especially in countries of the global south, a number of states have created and implemented repressive legal and/ or extra legal policies and mechanisms that target sexual minorities. These targeted communities have responded by launching advocacy campaigns to increase the demand for the decriminalization of their identities taking into consideration significant national/regional realities.

With these realities and issues in mind, IASSCS has conducted initiatives whose overall goal is to increase the visibility of, and provide crucial support to, ongoing advocacy efforts.
